Eira wins prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for care in Wales
EIRA EVANS from Powys is celebrating after scooping a national Lifetime Achievement Award at the Care Heroes Awards – beating off competition from 9,500 care workers across Britain.
The 70-year-old who got into the industry after looking after her family members has worked as a Community Carer for Abacare in Newtown since 2014 but has been providing care professionally for more than 21 years.
A delighted Eira said: “I am absolutely over the moon to have been recognised for my work in the care industry. I have always been passionate about care and it’s always been a big part of my life so to be awarded for something I love doing is amazing.
“I first got into care after looking after my father-in-law, dad, mum, mother-in-law and my late husband. I ended up turning the personal care I was providing for my loved ones into a professional career. I can’t imagine doing any other job and to me, care isn’t really a job to me as I enjoy it so much, it has become a vocation in life.
“I would recommend working in the care industry to anyone who might be thinking about it. I love the feeling of helping people to remain at home, surrounded by family and friends where they belong.”
When she is not working, Eira enjoys spending time with her family, especially visiting her grandchildren.
Eira’s role at Abacare covers all areas of care from palliative to domiciliary to learning disabilities and involves the delivery of professional personal care to members of the community on a daily basis.

The awards, held at the Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, were organised by City & County Healthcare Group, which is one of the largest providers of community-based social care services in the UK.
Established in 2009, the group has continued to grow through acquiring companies of all sizes and winning new business. The majority of its services are commissioned by local authorities and it also provides services to NHS commissioners and to a number of private individuals.
The awards were judged by the UKHCA, which is a professional association of home care providers from the independent, voluntary, not-for-profit and statutory sectors.
