Have you ever wondered why the three wise kings brought frankincense and myrrh? Well, it’s because they have healing and relaxing properties – something we could all do with at this time of year. In particular our carers and service users to help them de-stress.
Frankincense and myrrh were used for embalming and incense in ancient times. In traditional Chinese medicine myrrh was applied to treat wounds too.
Frankincense was also used as an anti-inflammatory in Ayurvedic medicine, which is a form of alternative medicine native to the Indian subcontinent.
Both are now used in Aromatherapy, so remember this when purchasing scented Christmas gifts this year.
Frankincense can help slow down our breathing and make you feel more relaxed – perfect for a stressed out carer who needs to unwind after a hectic shift.
Lighting a little of each in an oil burner may help conjure up the smell, if not the spirit, of a very traditional Christmas.
