Activities to do with a lonely elderly person on Valentine’s Day
While many of us indulge in gifts, flowers and a romantic meal out on Valentine’s Day, there are many people, the elderly in particular, who find it to be a difficult day as they have lost a partner.
If you have a parent or a friend/neighbour who has lost a loved-one, it’s a good idea to make sure they don’t miss out on the special day and can reminisce.
We’ve put together some suggestions for activities you can do together.
These can also come in handy for other occasions such as birthdays of loved-ones who have passed over or wedding anniversaries too.
Go for afternoon tea
You and your elderly parent/friend/neighbour could enjoy an afternoon tea together and have a good old chat. It’s a great opportunity to spend some quality time together and reminisce about the past. If they’re unable to leave the house, then why not bring the afternoon tea to them?
Take a walk
Going on a walk is a great way to clear away the cobwebs, especially at this time of year. It’s also good for your elderly loved-one to get some fresh air and exercise and the walk will help generally lift their mood.
Do some crafting or baking with the kids
Children are always a great mood booster, so get the kids and their grandparent together to do a bit of crafting or baking. It is a great way for the different generations to spend some time together and make some great memories.
If it’s not too difficult emotionally-speaking, why not spend time talking and reminiscing about your parent/friend/neighbour’s lost loved-one – it needn’t be upsetting, try focusing on the good memories and get the photo albums out too.
If you aren’t able to dedicate your time to an activity, then simply popping in to check on a loved-one is a great way to show you care. Just stopping for a quick cup of tea and a chat can really help boost their mood and not feeling lonely. If you can’t visit in person, a phone call will help too.
