Caring for a loved-one around other commitments

You may not realise it, but there are lots of people out there who are ‘undercover’ carers. These are people who are caring for loved-ones while also dealing with other family commitments, children and even working full-time jobs.

Caring for someone can be extremely time consuming and stressful, so it’s important to make sure you’re not afraid to ask for help from neighbours, friends and other family members. If a team of you can get together and work out a care rota, you’ll be safe in the knowledge that your loved-one is being regularly checked on and anything they need is being sorted. It also takes the stress off you as an individual. Be sure to keep in regular contact with updates on how your loved-one is getting on.

If you are caring for a loved-one alongside a job it’s important to inform your employer as they may be able to rearrange hours, be more flexible if you have to dash off for an emergency and even allow you to work from home if possible.

It’s important as a carer that you take some time for yourself to rest and recuperate. No-one will think you’re selfish for doing so, as if you aren’t well rested then you can’t possibly provide the best levels of care for your loved-one. You can read our top tips for alleviating stress here.

A longer break from caring duties is also important and we offer a respite care service for a minimum of two weeks so you can really rest up and know that your loved-one’s routine, lifestyle and care needs are being looked after. You can find out about our respite care services here.

From Monday, May 7 until Friday, May 11 we will be hosting a Respite Care Awareness Week for anyone who would like free advice on the different ways they can look after themselves and give themselves a break. Just give any of our offices a call – you can find all the details here.

If you feel you can no longer continue caring for a loved-one alongside your other commitments, then it might be time to introduce a home carer who can provide everything you and your loved-one needs – you can find out all about our services here.
