The benefits of slow cookers for the elderly
We’re big advocates of the elderly being able to lead as much of an independent life as possible while still in their own homes. Being able to prepare their own meals is a big part of living independently and while they might not be able to rustle up the grand dinners they might have done in the past, they’re still able to cook themselves tasty, interesting meals, and a great way to do this is with a slow cooker.
Slow cookers are ideal for an elderly person’s kitchen as they lend themselves to batch cooking and help create food that is soft and easy to chew. These days, vegetables can be bought already peeled and chopped and meat can be purchased fully prepared and already diced, meaning your elderly loved-one just needs to throw everything into the pot along with some stock/gravy, herbs and any spices they might want. If they have a reduced appetite, the smell of the food cooking can really help improve this.
Slow cookers are relatively safe for an elderly person living alone too. They’re cheap to run and won’t boil over/catch fire. We think the best thing about them is there’s only one pot to wash up at the end!
