Scott follows in his mum’s footsteps to become a care giver

Scott Renney from Aberdare has followed in his mum’s footsteps and recently (September, 2018) joined our team at our Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) office as a care giver.

Eighteen-year-old Scott was recommended to us by his mum Debbie Renney as part of our refer a friend scheme.

He said: “I am thrilled to have joined the team at Abacare as a care giver and to follow in my mum’s footsteps. She has always talked about how much of a rewarding job it is and seeing her build a career for herself has been an inspiration. It’s definitely something I want to do and I am looking forward to the many challenges and opportunities this job will bring in the future.”

As part of our on-going recruitment process, we offer £150 to care givers who recommend a friend or family member to work for it.

The person who has been recommended must stay with us and complete three months employment, delivering more than 100 hours of care, in order for the person who recommended them to receive the monetary reward.

Scott’s mum Debbie said: “I have worked at Abacare since 2016 and have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the company. It is a great place to work and it gives fantastic job satisfaction. I have made some real friends for life in my colleagues and the service users I care for.

“It takes a special kind of person to be a care giver and I knew Scott fitted the description of our ideal care giver, so I recommended him through the scheme. It is a fantastic incentive for staff and I hope to see Scott go on to carve a career for himself like I have done.”

Sarah Williams, Registered Manager at our RCT office, said: “One of the places to source the best employees possible is from the care givers who already work for us as they know exactly what we’re looking for and what sort of person will fit in well with the team, so if they recommend someone to us, we trust their judgement, which is why we trusted Debbie’s recommendation and hired Scott. If he is as excellent a care giver as his mum, then we know he will go very far in his career with us and we hope he will go on to recommend his own friends as part of the scheme.

“The scheme is hugely beneficial for anyone joining us following a referral from an existing employee as they will already know a friendly face and could go on to undertake training and various qualifications.

“Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society and the beauty of a job for life means people can start at the very bottom and work their way up with training and qualifications.

“We are looking for kind, honest, caring and reliable individuals who wish to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for.

“No experience is necessary to become a carer as free, full training is offered, which includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) after the initial six months probationary period.”

New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

We also offer FaceTime or Skype interviews to candidates in order to meet the demands of the modern jobseeker. Our view is that busy people wanting a career change can ‘meet’ the team via FaceTime or similar applications and find out about the roles we have to offer, as well as meet a couple of team members and, if they are about, also say ‘hello’ to a carer too.
