Film suggestions for people with dementia
Films are a great way to help improve a person with dementia’s mood and to help them stay engaged with something. Films which do not have a complex storyline and where there is comedy, musical entertainment or action are just some of the genres that can be most appealing to someone with the disease.
Watching a film with a loved-one is a great activity that families can do together too. It’s also a great way to encourage conversation as you can talk about your favourite films, your favourite scenes or characters together.
Dementia UK recently revealed its top films to watch with a person with dementia. It recommended Mamma Mia as a great interactive film as viewers can sing along to all of the Abba songs and enjoy the musical element.
It also recommended Laurel and Hardy films as many people diagnosed with dementia grew up watching slapstick routines. Watching a Laurel and Hardy film can help with reminiscence and create great enjoyment and distraction.
Top Gun was another recommendation for younger people with dementia as it has a straightforward plot line and can help hold a person with dementia’s attention.
We’ve put together a list of other films that we’d recommend watching with a loved-one with dementia:
- The Wizard of Oz
- The Sound of Music
- Singin’ in the Rain
- Calamity Jane
- Mr Bean
- Pretty Woman
- I Love Lucy
- Driving Miss Daisy
- Walk the Line
- The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
- Bringing up Baby.
