Carer: Mel Edwards
Specialism: Care ambassador
Mel, who works at our Newtown branch, providing care to service users in the area, is also one of our Care Ambassadors and offers free talks to schools and colleges about care.
The talks provide an insight into the industry for any students interested in working in it in the future and also encourage understanding and knowledge about the care sector.
Mel said: “I thoroughly enjoy educating younger people on the needs of the elderly and vulnerable and how the care sector works, including how care staff enable people to remain living in the comfort of their own homes and how we help them live as normal of a life as possible. With an ageing population, we feel this is more important than ever.
“It’s also important to make them aware of conditions such as dementia, which is a major issue in Wales, and, according to the NHS Wales, approximately 42,000 people in the country currently have it in some form.
“Students can also ask any questions they might have about the care industry, if they are interested in potentially working in it in the future, or the elderly and vulnerable.”
