Advice for undercover carers

There are thousands of people out there who are ‘undercover’ carers.

Undercover carers

These are people who are caring for loved ones while also dealing with other family commitments, children and even working full-time.

This can be extremely time consuming and stressful. It’s important to make sure you’re not afraid to ask for help.

If a team of you, including friends, family and neighbours, can work out a care rota, you’ll be safe in the knowledge that your loved-one is being regularly checked. However, please ensure that all COVID-19 restrictions are being adhered to when doing so.

Having help takes the stress off you as an individual. Be sure to keep in regular contact with updates on how your loved-one is getting on.

If you are caring for a loved-one alongside a job it’s important to inform your employer. They may be able to rearrange hours. They might also be more flexible if you have to dash off for an emergency.

It’s important that you take some time for yourself to rest and recuperate. No-one will think you’re selfish for doing so. If you aren’t well rested then you can’t possibly provide the best levels of care for your loved-one.

A longer break from caring duties is also important. We offer a respite care service for a minimum of two weeks. This allows you to rest up and know that your loved-one’s routine, lifestyle and care needs are being looked after. You can find out about our respite care services here.

Carers Rights Day takes place on Thursday, November 26 and aims to raise awareness of undercover carers, making sure they know their rights and what support they’re entitled to.

Carers Wales has produced a guide for anyone caring for family or friends. The guide outlines your rights as a carer and gives an overview of the practical and financial support available.  You can view the helpful guide here.

If you feel you can no longer continue caring for a loved-one alongside your other commitments, then it might be time to introduce a home carer who can provide everything you and your loved-one needs – you can find out all about our services here.
