Craft activities for the elderly on rainy days
The weather is always up and down, so it’s important to be prepared for all eventualities. If you or an elderly loved-one are often at a loss as to what to do when you’re stuck indoors on a rainy day, then we’ve put together some craft activities you could have a go at.

Upcycle things around the house
If you have some old baked bean or chopped tomato cans, plastic bottles or even some old teacups that you don’t mind using, why not plant up some mini herb gardens? Make sure they are clean and safe to use before starting, so no nasty sharp edges. Place some small stones or gravel in the bottom for drainage, fill with soil and pop in your seeds. They could be parsley, chives, coriander, anything is possible. Then just pop on your windowsill and you’ll have access to fresh herbs for cooking, without having to pop outside.
If you have any teacups that are chipped or scratched, you could turn them into bird feeders for the garden. Just tie some string or ribbon to the handle and fill with a good mix of bird seed and peanut butter. Hang from trees and watch the birds enjoy them.
Pressed flowers
When the weather is dry, gather some flowers from the garden. Arrange them creatively on a piece of paper and pop another piece of paper on top. Pop a heavy book on top and leave overnight. Then, when the weather turns, you can spend your day using the pressed flowers for crafts such as greetings cards or pop them into a photo frame.
Pebble painting
A great one to do with grandchildren on a rainy day is pebble painting. It has become a popular trend at the moment where people paint pebbles and leave them in secret locations. People then find them and pop them somewhere new. There are many groups online you can join and post about where you have found pebbles.
If you don’t have suitable stones or pebbles at home in the garden, try your nearest craft store or your local garden centre. Wash them and paint them using a waterproof craft paint or acrylic paint. You can paint them in any colours or patterns and even include inspirational messages.
