A quick natter with Nerys

Nerys Hughes, who has NVQ Level 2 and 3, joined us in 2003 and is currently an Operations Executive.

Her role covers all areas of care from palliative to domiciliary to learning disabilities.

She started as a carer with us and, due to Nerys’ commitment, hard work and dedication, she was promoted to Operations Executive.

What sort of care does Abacare offer in your opinion?

“We offer a person-centred approach to domiciliary care. Every individual in the organisation’s care is initially assessed and a service delivery plan is written to ensure all their particular needs, both physically and mentally, are met.”

What are you particularly proud of that you’ve achieved in your current role?

Nerys Hughes, Abacare“I helped implement our I-care initiative to deliver faster and more focused person-centred care outcomes. Regional Managers here have embraced the latest technology to help them perform their roles and I’ve been very much a part of this.

“The team uses smart phones, laptops and tablets to enable them to react quickly to various issues and log them in real time.

“Using smart phones, laptops or tablets means they are able to react fast to any rota gaps and to not only fill these, so service users don’t miss out on any support they need, but to also ensure that carers with the right personality attributes are always assigned to them.

“We are also able to use them on all spot checks or investigations that we carry out and we can take and upload pictures of any issues and send them back to the office straight away.

2All files are kept completely up-to-date and the technology has helped speed up reactions in relation to particular events.”

Do you still care for people?

“As well as my role managing a team regionally, I also find time to look after service users and I have formed special relationships with many of the individuals who have been and are in my care.

“I have helped two gentlemen with disabilities adjust and fit back into the community with the least disruption. Before one of the gentleman’s father passed away, he commented that he would die happy knowing that his son had been integrated back into the community.

Richard, one of my service users, I’ve cared for for more than 10 years. Even though Richard’s mother passed away just over a year ago, with my help, Richard has been able to maintain his independence within the community.”
