Hidden Disability Sunflower lanyard scheme launched

An initiative designed to act as a discreet sign that somebody has a disability and requires additional assistance, has been launched.

Hidden Disability Sunflower lanyard scheme launched

People with hidden disabilities can now wear a lanyard covered in sunflowers.

The hidden disabilities eligible for the scheme include autism, Asperger’s, learning disabilities and dementia. Also included are issues such as arthritis, MS, ME, other chronic illnesses, visual and hearing impairments.

Tabbers Limited and the OSC Group UK, who provide support services to UK airports, developed the scheme together.

Supermarket giants Tesco and Sainsbury’s are now recognising the scheme. Staff will offer people wearing a lanyard any additional help they might need.

A person wearing a lanyard can have more time at the checkout if they need it. They can also have help with packing bags and assistance with hard-to-reach products.

Lanyards are now available from participating stores and at UK airports free of charge. They can also be purchased for 66p plus postage from the Hidden Disabilities Store as well as ID cards, posters, car stickers and ribbons.

We think the lanyards are a great idea because they help bring awareness to the general public that someone might have a disability and will help to avoid any uncomfortable situations.
